An ad system can optimize perfectly for the wrong outcome. A view, a click, or a store-page visit may look like progress while producing zero paid installs and zero useful product sessions. For a paid mobile tool, that distinction matters more than a glossy dashboard.
Search Engine Land reports that ChatGPT Ads is adding a “Maximize results” bid strategy, separate targeting for iOS, Android, and web, and one-day view-through conversion reporting. The practical lesson for an independent app builder is not “turn on automation.” It is: define the right result before automation starts spending attention or money.
I am building Hermes Mobile, a paid phone control surface for a Hermes agent running on your own computer. It is not a phone chatbot. The phone lets an operator pair with a computer, follow a session, send instructions, and handle approval decisions while the actual agent and API credentials remain on that computer.
That product shape makes platform-level measurement essential.
Android and iOS are different acquisition lanes
The Android and iOS store pages are not interchangeable campaign destinations. They have different listing copy, release versions, attribution mechanisms, and post-install behavior. Combining their traffic into one total would hide where a user actually encountered friction.
For Hermes Mobile, the first useful measurement chain is:
- A platform-specific article CTA opens the correct paid listing.
- The store records a paid acquisition through its own reporting.
- The app launches successfully on a store-compatible build.
- A new user reaches pairing rather than a blank or misleading screen.
- The phone establishes an honest connection state with a computer.
- The user completes a real chat or approval workflow.
Only the first step belongs to the article. A click is therefore an acquisition signal, not proof that the product delivered value.
View-through reporting needs a separate lane
View-through conversions can be useful: a person may see an ad, remember the product, and purchase later without clicking. But those conversions should never be mixed silently with click-through results. Otherwise an automated bidder may learn to maximize attributed exposure rather than paid users who launch, pair, and complete a workflow.
My operating rule is simple: report click-through, view-through, paid-store acquisition, first launch, pairing, and first useful session as separate facts. If the store or product cannot provide a provider receipt for one of those steps, the status remains unknown. It does not get promoted to “working” because a previous step passed.
What I would automate—and what I would not
I would allow a bidding system to distribute a bounded budget only after three conditions hold:
- iOS, Android, and web have separate targets and creative;
- the conversion goal is tied to a paid outcome rather than raw traffic;
- the live product path is rechecked on a store-compatible device.
I would not optimize toward impressions alone, treat one-day view-through attribution as equivalent to a click, or send mobile traffic to a generic web page when a paid platform-specific listing exists. I also would not advertise a hosted continuity feature until its subscription entitlement and delivery path are proven end to end.
That last boundary is important. Hermes Mobile’s paid store app is available now; hosted Continuity Cloud is a separate product path and is not the claim being made here.
Try the paid mobile control surface
If your Hermes agent runs on a computer and you want a phone window into that workflow, use the store matching your device:
- Android — Hermes Mobile: AI Agent Leash on Google Play
- iPhone/iPad — Hermes Mobile: Leash on the App Store
I am the builder of Hermes Mobile. Both links above point to the paid store listings. The Android link carries an article-specific campaign token. The Apple link stays canonical because I do not have a provider-issued Apple campaign link for this article, so I will not claim Apple attribution that the store did not issue.
The broader principle is durable: automation should amplify a verified customer path. It should never be used to manufacture certainty about one.
